NECO2026.BLOG: Everything You Need on

What is NECO?

NECO (National Examinations Council) is the Nigerian federal government agency responsible for conducting national examinations at the secondary school level, such as the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), for students in Nigeria. Established in 1999, NECO provides an alternative national examination body to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), and its certificates are accepted for higher education and employment within Nigeria and West Africa.

What is The Difference Between WAEC and NECO in Nigeria.

WAEC, the full form is West African Examinations Council, is a regional examination body established to conduct exams in West African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, and Gambia. Its key objective is to assess students completing their secondary education and certify them for higher education or employment.

NECO, the National Examinations Council, is Nigeria’s indigenous examination body, established to offer affordable and accessible exams specifically for Nigerian students. It serves as an alternative to WAEC, focusing on local educational standards.

Features Of NECO

Exclusive to Nigeria: Unlike WAEC, NECO is not conducted in other West African countries, making it more localized.

Examinations Conducted: SSCE (Senior School Certificate Examination): For school candidates in June/July.

External SSCE: For private candidates in November/December.

Exam Format: Similar to WAEC, with objective and theory sections.

Mandatory Subjects: English Language, Mathematics, and other electives based on the student’s chosen field.

NECO SSCE Internal 2026: Registration should begin early in the year, maybe around January or February, and run for a few months. The closing deadline will likely fall around April or May 2026.

NECO GCE 2026 (External): Registration is expected to open around September 2026 and close in November 2026. These dates are not yet official, but they match the pattern NECO has used for years. Until the exam body announces the exact schedule, the safest thing is to be ready early.
